Twain was born March 4, 1935 in Stamford, TX, the son of the late Lillian Ross Mickler and Jesse James Mickler. He was baptized at Paint Creek Baptist Church. On July 29, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Ann Griffin Mickler. When his kids were young, he was always actively involved in getting them ready for the calf shows or swimming with them after farming for the day. For 42 years, Twain farmed until his retirement, and operated Veda's Camp with Shirley. After retirement from farming, they ran an adult-assisted living service in their home where he enjoyed cooking a big breakfast every morning. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous where he sponsored many grateful survivors. He was also a member of Cross Country Emmaus Community and served as Lay Director and a board member. Twain enjoyed running trot lines and hunting. His woodworking skills included making several pieces of furniture for his home and his family. Later on one of his favorite things to do was riding around on his golf cart and visiting with people at the camp. He was always willing to let customers borrow tools or equipment from his shop. He never met a stranger.
