Obituary for Wayne Merchant
Wayne Merchant, 71, of Abilene, passed away, Sunday, March 27, 2022 in Hendrick Hospice of Abilene. A Graveside Service will be held 2pm, Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at Willow Cemetery with Pastor Dillon Mathes officiating. A visitation will be 6pm-8pm, Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at Haskell Funeral Home, 2 Avenue D. Condolences may be made at www.haskellfuneralhometx.com.
Wayne was born June 02, 1950 in Haskell, Texas, the son of Herbert “Cleo” Merchant and the late Susie Tanner Merchant. On September 03, 1982, he married Sherry Jones, in Stamford, TX. From 1968 to 1971, he served as a Seabees in the U S Navy; from 1975 to 1979 he worked for the City of Haskell, Police Departments, where he was Chief of Police and from 1994 to 2007, worked as a correctional officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Additionally, he was a farmer, enjoyed fishing and loved playing the guitar.
He was preceded in death by his mother; brother, Alan Keith Merchant; and son, Michael Ray Becknel.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Sherry Merchant of Abilene; father, Cleo Merchant and wife Jean of Comfort, TX; sister, Selena Wood and husband Glenn of Lovington, NM; son, Alan Wayne Merchant and wife Crystal of Abilene, TX; two daughters, Stacy Taylor and Linda Beggs, both of Stamford, TX, 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
