Doris Susianna "Sue" Provines

Doris Susianna “Sue” Provines entered into the presence of her Savior and into the arms of her loved ones waiting in Heaven on August 29, 2026, after a long and full life. She was born to Harold and Dorothy (Huffman) Folsom in Vincennes, IN, on July 16, 1934. She grew up in Vincennes alongside her brothers, Wayne and Bubby, and sister, Lillie (Crock). Another brother, Billy Ray, passed away as an infant but she never forgot him and spoke of him often. Sue was a proud graduate of Fritchton High School, Class of 1953.

She worked in retail after high school. One day, while out walking with her cousin Frankie, she met Don Provines and was instantly smitten. She said it was love at first sight and she would have married him that day. The feeling was mutual between Don and Sue, and they married on March 14, 1954. The family grew with the additions of Donna (Coombes), Rick, Susan (Skinner), and Darla (Mengwasser). They lived in Vincennes (IN), Bloomfield (IN), Bondville (IL), and Champaign (IL).

Life completely changed for the whole family after they were invited to a church service at Bible Baptist in Champaign. Sue put her faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior that day. Later, after the family moved to El Paso, TX, her husband Don would fill God’s call to preach. From that time on, they ministered together to struggling churches and edified them numerically and spiritually. Don would preach and Sue played the piano or organ. They loved to sing together and spent many hours around the piano making precious memories. They ministered in Eunice (NM), Monahans (TX), Bedford (IN), Sonora (TX), Coleman (TX), and Electra (TX). They retired to Haskell, TX, where Don would help fill the pulpit at Sweet Home Baptist Church and Sue continued to play the piano for the services.

Music was such a passion instilled in her at a young age. During the Depression, her father founded the Harold Folsom Orchestra. From that time on, Sue was surrounded by music and musical instruments which led to her lifelong love of music. If she wasn’t playing an instrument or singing at church, she was practicing the piano at home.

Sue took pride in her grandkids and, for many of them, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and birthdays always meant time spent at Grandma and Grandpa's house. She enjoyed her role as homemaker and kept an immaculate house. Sue took up golfing and enjoyed mornings on the greens with her husband. She was very artistic and loved to paint landscapes. Sue loved being outdoors and spent countless hours working in her yard, with many of those hours spent on her hands and knees pulling weeds.

Her well-known guilty pleasure was Soaps. She started listening to them on the radio and faithfully watched as they transitioned to television. Sue became an avid collector of many things, especially cookbooks, roosters, and anything that played music or made noise.

She was preceded in her death by her parents, her husband, her brothers, her son, 2 granddaughters (Rebecca Coombes and Courtney Mengwasser), and a son-in-law (Scott Coombes).

Sue is survived by her sister and brother-in-law (Lillie and Bob Crock), her 3 daughters, 7 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.

Services for Sue will take place at Paint Creek Baptist Church on Thursday September 3, 2026 at 2:00 pm. Officiating the service will be her grandson, Pastor Jeremy Coombes.
