Obituary for Thomas "Gene" Eugene Long

Thomas Eugene “Gene” Long, Sr., 86, passed away, Saturday, May 29, 2021, in Haskell, Texas. A Funeral Service will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at the Haskell Church of Christ with Tim Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Cemetery under the direction of Haskell Funeral Home, 2 Avenue D. A visitation will be held 6:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, May 31, 2021 at Haskell Funeral Home. Gene was born May 8, 1935 in Quanah, Texas to Barney Eugene and Sybil Cook Long. He graduated from Kermit High School. Gene was a Switch Board Operator while in the Army. He married Jo Iva Johnson on January 27, 1957 in Haskell, Texas. He started working at Boggs and Johnson Furniture Store in 1959 and remained active in the business as long as his health would allow. He was a member of the Haskell Church of Christ where he taught Sunday School, Children’s Bible Hour and taught Bible Classes at the Prison. Gene was very active in the Haskell Community and a member of many organizations, he was a Past President of the Lions Club, Past President of the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Past President of the Little League and was an EMT in the 1970’s. Gene enjoying woodworking and working on appliances.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Sybil Long and his brother, Jimmy Lee Long.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Iva Long of Haskell; son, Tom Long and wife Carla, of Haskell; daughter, Shelly Hodde and husband, Dr. Doug of Whitehouse; grandchildren, Nathan Long, Debbi Maxwell and husband Aaron, Andrew Long, Sarah Jo Atkinson and husband Grant, Katherine Hodde and husband Taahir, Alice Sanderson and husband David; 6 great-grandchildren; niece, Candice James of Oklahoma; cousins Barbara Puckett of Andrews, Norma Bragg of Ruidoso, NM, Leon Long, Jr. of Lubbock, James Long of Ruidoso, NM and a host of dear friends.
